We had the happy thought that there might be some cruisers out there who are planning a trip through the Strait of Georgia. The Gulf Islands of B.C. boast a surreal beauty, and there is no better way to enjoy the scenery than from the vantage point of your own vessel.
We're sailors too, so we would like to welcome anyone cruising by to stop in and enjoy our hospitality. Just southeast of the Denman West Ferry terminal, Lie the remains of Denman's former public wharf, a right angle line of pilings that form a rough breakwater. A couple of local boats are generally tied up here, and as long as you are sure of your depth it is possible to anchor in this general vicinity, noting the yellow anchor quarantine buoy which marks the location of some underwater obstructions.

Drop the hook and row ashore there is a public restroom and a payphone here right by the beach, and five minutes walk up the hill brings you to the Denman Island General Store; gas, diesel, propane, liquor and groceries. Generally open til 9p.m. Once ashore you may phone us from the pay phone at the ferry landing, we'll come and get you. Or, if you prefer, anchor up in Henry Bay, at the northwest tip of Denman Island, and call us on your cell, we'll come and get you from there too.

Going on to Hornby? We're not surprised. Hornby is much more of a visitor's destination than Denman, due to its greater tourism infrastructure, well-deserved reputation for arts and crafts, dazzling scenery, and the famous white sands of Tribune Bay. There's even an ATM on Hornby. With such fame comes congestion and increased prices; it is often difficult to book accommodation on Hornby, and the traditional bucolic ambience can be compromised by the nocturnal mating cries of revellers and the rumble of their SUVs.

An alternative to staying on Hornby is to simply visit there from Denman for the day, returning to our lower-keyed purlieus at night. China Moon is a leisurely 20 minute drive from Gravelly Bay, where the Hornby ferry docks.
